Crossing the Merritt Canal by Artist Troy Richard Thomas

Crossing to the island on the Wapsipinicon River. My Aunts husband Ed took a shovel to a low wash on a peninsula and created an island on the Wapsi at the farm. Eventually the river took over and widened his digging. I spent a lot of time on the island, one time we saw tracks that looked like a mountain lions paw prints. Not that far fetched, since a lion was recently killed 15 miles from my home in Amana.

Diary entry from the book {Promehteus Lives} by Artist Troy Richard Thomas

April Wed. 26, 1989   The boat came in the afternoon and my Father and I lifted it up out of the crate, and laid it down in the backyard. I evaluated it silently as my Dad spoke of its quality.
The boat is a Chinook sea kayak made by Aquaterra, sold through the Folbot brochure. Both companies are based in South Carolina. The boat is orange/red and has a length of fifteen feet ten inches, the width is twenty four inches tapering. The kayak has very sleek lines and is shaped like a dart or dagger. It is made out of polyethylene plastic. The kayak has a shallow "v" hull for speed, stability, and tracking. The Chinook is designed by a man named Lee Moyer, and indeed it is a great design.
I chose a sea kayak versus a canoe because they give you speed, stability, and control in rough open water, with high wakes and waves. A canoe is good for portaging, or for two people, instead of solo. Canoes also act like sails in open water.
After looking the boat over for several minutes, I find a few flaws with the craft, but no faults that can't be conquered, what's there is beautiful.

Poetry from the book {Bunny Hop} by Artist Troy Richard Thomas

He paddled upstream along the snowy banks

He stayed on the river through the Winter and when the buds turned green he went home

An old man walks out into a storm

The storm was dark blue with high winds but very little rain

The old man used a feathered walking stick

A sheep dog bit at his heels

The old man made his way up a hill of pure golden prairie

Out of the West came a tornado of great power

With the tornado very clear and rushing on, the old man spreads his arms out (with walking stick in one hand) and asks the tornado to take him away

The dust fizzles around him and then he is torn apart

So now that this story is over, how would like to hear about a bug fucking another bug in Puerto Rico?

Now don't close that book, it aint over yet. The
SPLAT!  SPLAT!

Introduction page to the book {Prometheus Lives} by Artist Troy Richard Thomas

The book "Prometheus Lives", is a philosophical discussion of how and why we live. Through poetry, fictional stories, and diary entries of far flung adventures these important issues are discussed.
The poetry of my later years has become a sort of Confucianism, or words to live by. It is filled with the issues of the day, and my momentary feelings. Within you will find in repetition that I have no love for the school system, or much respect for politics. Nor will I suffer the fools who blindly play the game, and are chiefly responsible for the economic savagery that destroys what is good in man.

And lastly comes "Poodle Farm", the story of a breed of dog that man shall always scorn, and what calamity ensues from the actions of two raw individuals.
I had this story for several years, but did not finish it till a friend challenged me to complete it. As I came down from the mountains of Idaho, after electrocuting fish for the government, I sat down and got it done.
