The Loess Hills are a varying 200 foot thick wind deposited soil situated in Western Iowa. The hills start from the Big Sioux River above Sioux City and travel along the Missouri River flats and end just past the Missouri border. Loess soil can be found all over the world but it is rare to find it in such great quantity. There are only two thick deposits China. Iowa's deposits were created by a receding glacier. China's loess deposits were created by an ancient desert of shifting sand dunes. In China the hills are farmed and cut to pieces. In Iowa the hills are used to the degree that they can be. The following story is situated in the Loess Hills of Iowa. It must be said that the Loess Hills are a vastly beautiful place in this world.
